Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
