Minister Says Ministry of Defence Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Instructed to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defence minister has revealed that the MoD is currently investigating the possible threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been told to avoid discussing classified matters in any vehicles.

Safety Advice for Defence Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about secret information while travelling in China-made cars.

The minister stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however stressed that security is a issue in all modern cars.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any car, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and bring disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

This wider security environment highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government activities, including transport usage to communication habits.
