RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
