Cancellieri Demonstrates Brief Sparks of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a thread holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, but then he admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return

A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
