A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
