Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.
Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
Authorities in Germany state the network was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.
Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.
Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.
In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.
The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.
Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.
Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.
“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
